Breeding sheep for success is never down to one single factor - it’s a combination of genetics, nutrition and attention to detail.
Few examples demonstrate this better than the father-and-son team of Graeme and Finn Christie who run their pedigree Suffolk flocks under the Balquhain and Maidstone prefixes, alongside their Balquhain Beltex flock.
Their carefully managed breeding and feeding programme continues to deliver results at the highest level. At this year’s Royal Highland Show, the Christies enjoyed an outstanding Suffolk Championship, securing both the Overall Suffolk Champion and Overall Reserve Suffolk Champion titles. Graeme took the Championship honours with his ewe, while Finn claimed the Reserve Championship with his shearling ram, alongside several other class placings throughout the section. Finn also enjoyed success in the Beltex ring, taking Reserve Female Champion with his shearling Beltex ewe.
These latest accolades build on previous successes in the show ring, including a standout season in 2025 when the Christies’ Suffolk gimmer secured Reserve Female Champion and Reserve Overall Champion at the Royal Highland Show. In the same year they also won Suffolk National Champion, Angus Sheep Champion (later selling for 12,000gns) and Overall Champion of Champions.
Over the past eight years, the Christies have worked closely with Norvite’s Commercial Director Ross Williams, fine-tuning their feeding strategy to maximise performance. The results speak for themselves, with current daily liveweight gains (DLWG) averaging an impressive 700g per day.
This season, the team has 70 Suffolk lambs on the ground, all born within a tight lambing window between 5th and 11th January. The consistency of this lamb crop has provided a strong foundation and the Christies are already encouraged by how well the lambs are growing and developing.
At the heart of their system is a strong focus on ewe nutrition. By feeding lactating ewes to a high standard, they ensure milk production is sufficient to meet the demands of fast-growing lambs. This early nutrition lays the foundation for everything that follows, giving lambs the best possible start in life. Graeme is quick to highlight the support behind the system, “The nutritional advice from Ross and the technical team at Norvite has been second to none.”
From four weeks of age, lambs are introduced to Norvite Lamb Bloom, a specialist coarse mix designed with added Nu-Start to support early growth and rumen development. The impact has been clear. As Graeme explains, one of the standout benefits is its palatability: “The lambs don’t leave a scrap - they lick the feeders clean.” This not only reduces waste but ensures that every lamb receives the full nutritional benefit of the ration.
As the lambs develop, the Christies transition them onto a home-grown mix tailored to maintain performance. This ration is based on cooked cereals and micronised ingredients, designed to enhance energy intake and improve nutrient utilisation - particularly important in high-performance and finishing systems. The mix also includes ALpHA-treated beans, which provide a high-quality source of protein and energy, along with additional B vitamins to support rapid growth and overall vitality. Feeding a consistent, high-quality ration across the flock helps keep management simple while allowing the sheep to express their genetic potential.
Ross Williams highlights that consistency is a key driver behind the flock’s success: “Graeme and Finn are extremely disciplined in how they feed. The rations are carefully tailored to suit their system and the specific needs of their Suffolk and Beltex sheep and, crucially, they apply that plan consistently every day. Their attention to detail, particularly when it comes to mixing high-quality ingredients into their home-grown ration, is what allows the genetics to truly perform.”
With a clear focus on nutrition, a willingness to adapt and a reliable partnership with Norvite, Graeme and Finn Christie continue to demonstrate what can be achieved when breeding and feeding strategies align. It’s a winning formulation, but not taking their success for granted, the Christies are ambitious for continuous improvement.
