Norvite was founded in 1973 by Alistair
Pirie, Roy Matheson and Gilbert Reid who left Spencers
Feeds when it was taken over by Unilever. Over the next
22 years, Norvite built a substantial business supplying
supplements and protein concentrates direct to farms throughout
Scotland and the Scottish Isles. The success of the business
was based on excellent quality products and first class
customer service.
In 1995, with no natural succession plan in place the directors sold the company
to SCA Nutrition, one of the major suppliers to Norvite of baby pig diets. Shortly
afterwards, SCA - along with Nutec, Norvite and other subsidiary businesses -
was itself acquired by multinational Provimi. Norvite became a private,
locally-owned business once more in 2005, just over 3 years ago.
Since 1998, faced with a diminishing Scottish livestock population and in order
to drive growth, the business has diversified into complete blended feeds, mobile
milling and most recently retailing to the leisure feed market whilst maintaining
a strong market share in on-farm feed supplements – which is still very much
Norvite’s core business.
